Wednesday Adult Study
Modern-Day Cults
To better understand who we are as Christians it is necessary in
part to know how we differ from others who claim the name of
Christ but don’t believe the basic truths we believe. How do we
properly define a cult? Is it merely a group that is tightly
controlled and does not socialize or worship with other
Christians? Is it a group that has “weird” views about God? A cult
deceives those within it and often seeks to deceive those it tries
to recruit.
1 John 4:1 teaches us “Beloved, do not believe
every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God;
because many false prophets have gone out into the world."
This is what we seek to accomplish as we study various
modern-day
cults. How can we know what we believe is true and what they
believe is false? How do we answer the questions of cults
and how do we go from the defensive to the offensive seeking to
win others over to Christ?
Our guide will be the book, Cults and the Occult by Edmond C. Gruss. The study of the Scriptures will help us understand God’s
truth and expose the lies of men. Our goal is to grow in
biblical knowledge (systematic theology), ability to defend the
faith (apologetics) and learn biblical evangelism in the
process. By accomplishing these goals we will find the Holy
Sprit equipping us to stand strong as soldiers of Christ, as
instructed in 2
Timothy 2:15, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a
worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly divining the
word of truth."
Please join us on Wednesday nights at 7 pm for this study. It is
open for ages 12 – adult.
